The Montessori Method of educating children is the lifework of Dr. Maria Montessori. Maria Montessori was born in 1870 and was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree. She became captivated with the field of child development and extended her interests to psychiatry, anthropology and education.
Through a scientific lens, Dr. Montessori studied children across different cultures and demographics. She discovered how each child could reach their full potential in a carefully prepared environment designed to fulfill their needs as they moved through different phases of childhood. She recognized each child as an individual, compelled to seek out experiences to develop their capabilities; not as an ‘empty vessel’ to simply be filled with knowledge.
The Montessori Method has guided the education of children for more than 110 years across the face of our planet. Many great thinkers of our time have been Montessori students and attribute the influence of their education to how they approach their life and work.
