Over 6000 acres of parkland and green space gives Surrey the name “City of Parks”. But Surrey provides much more to residents, businesses and visitors alike. Surrey offers many things to do, like the arts and culture in our galleries, events and festivals and leisure activities. The Canada Day celebration and the Fusion Festival are two of the region’s most popular summer festivals, and see thousands of visitors every year.

History of Surrey

In September 1993, Surrey officially became a city. Since then, the city has undergone tremendous change and growth. The overall quality of life has risen to new and impressive heights.

Incorporated in 1879, Surrey has a rich history of diverse ethnic backgrounds that have come together to make it one of British Columbia’s most unique communities. Comprised of forests of fir, cedar and hemlock, and basically untouched, the tone of Surrey’s future as the City of Parks was set. Logging began, settlement took place, and Surrey started to take shape. As you drive throughout the City, take notice of the heritage markers bearing the names of the early settlers to the area such as Johnston Road, Sullivan Station and Hjorth Road to name a few.

Surrey’s population is projected to increase by an additional 250,000 people in the next 25 years. By 2041, 1 in 5 Metro Vancouver residents will live in Surrey.
