Maria Montessori’s 19 commandments

Maria Montessori's commandments for raising better children
19 commandments for raising a better child

Maria Montessori’s 19 commandments for raising a better child.

I came upon this in a recent Facebook post and it’s definitely worth repeating here:

Things to do:

  1. Children learn from what surrounds them.
  2. Praise a child often and they learn how to evaluate others.
  3. Treat a child with honesty and they learn the meaning of fairness.
  4. If a child feels safe they learn to trust people.
  5. Give frequent encouragement and they will have high self-esteem.
  6. Demonstrate patience and they will learn patience.
  7. If a child lives in an atmosphere of friendship and feels others need it they will learn how to find love.
  8. Support your child and they will be confident.
  9. Concentrate on nurturing the good in a child. That way there will be no place left in them for the bad.
  10. Always listen to and answer a child’s questions or requests should they approach you.
  11. Respect a child even when they make a mistake. They will be able to correct their error soon enough.
  12. Always be ready to help a child who requires assistance and to stand aside when they’ve found everything they need.
  13. Help a child to master things early. This can be done by making sure the world around them is filled with affection, peace and love.
  14. Always display the best manners to a child. Show them how to be the best they can be.

Things to avoid:

  1. A child who is often criticized learns how to condemn others.
  2. If a child is shown hostility they will learn how to fight.
  3. Deride a child too often and they become shy.
  4. If a child is too often made to feel ashamed they will learn to always feel guilty.
  5. Never speak badly of a child, in their presence or otherwise.

The commandments are just as valid today as they were when Maria Montessori wrote them.
