Planning on moving your family to Surrey?

Surrey is right next door to Langley. Located 40 minutes from Vancouver, at the crossroads of the Pacific Rim, Greater Vancouver and the USA, Surrey is the 2nd largest city in BC. It is the 12th largest city in Canada with a population of over 468,000. And the city is still growing. Surrey is set to become the most populated city in Metro Vancouver by 2020. People from around the world continue to move to one of the youngest and most culturally diverse cities in Canada.

Surrey’s population is young and diverse. Over 27% of the population is under 19 years old, and over 43% of the residents speak a language that is not English at home. Children and youth and diversity are what makes Surrey unique. Families come to our communities from South Asia, Korea, China and all around the world.

Over 6000 acres of parkland and green space gives Surrey the name “City of Parks”. But Surrey provides much more to residents, businesses and visitors alike. Surrey offers many things to do, like the arts and culture in our galleries, events and festivals and leisure activities. The Canada Day celebration and the Fusion Festival are two of the region’s most popular summer festivals, and see thousands of visitors every year.

Surrey’s location provides ideal opportunities for transportation of goods and services worldwide. Surrey offers easy and convenient access to Vancouver International Airport and has two international border crossings into the U.S. You’ll find an excellent transportation network including 6 major highways, rail and a deep sea port.

History of Surrey

In September 1993, Surrey officially became a city. Since then, the city has undergone tremendous change and growth. The overall quality of life has risen to new and impressive heights.

Incorporated in 1879, Surrey has a rich history of diverse ethnic backgrounds that have come together to make it one of British Columbia’s most unique communities. Comprised of forests of fir, cedar and hemlock, and basically untouched, the tone of Surrey’s future as the City of Parks was set. Logging began, settlement took place, and Surrey started to take shape. As you drive throughout the City, take notice of the heritage markers bearing the names of the early settlers to the area such as Johnston Road, Sullivan Station and Hjorth Road to name a few.

Surrey’s population is projected to increase by an additional 250,000 people in the next 25 years. By 2041, 1 in 5 Metro Vancouver residents will live in Surrey.
